Manor Barn
Residential Barn Refurbishment, Historic, Listed
When we were appointed to work on this project we were greeted with a 1950’s chocolate brown brick bungalow on a gloomy day which featured very little appeal to spend time in. Our client tasked us with a comprehensive contemporary re-imagination of the house to double its sleeping capacity and create modern bright and open spaces to replace the dark and cellular rooms.
The cramped existing cellular Kitchen, Hall and Dining Room were opened up to create a multi-level open plan central core, flooded with light through new Velux windows inserted into the open plan staircase zone.
In order to take full advantage of the impressive garden outlook, we created an extension to double the size of the living room and, through the use of a large corner bi-folding door, we created a room that could fully open up to the garden.
Within the existing roof space, some new steelwork permitted the formation of 2 new Bedrooms, a family Bathroom and a landing running the length of the house overlooking the double height Dining area below. A new entrance lobby extension gave the previously unreadable entrance façade a clear entry point whilst further allowing natural light into the floor plan.
Aesthetically, a crisp modern off-white render, Zinc single storey roof, grey concrete re-tiled main roof and composite Aluminium external door and window set elevated a once uninspiring suburban bungalow into a truly modern 2 storey family home. The combination of materiality and spatial reorganisation makes Lymington Bottom one of our most truly transformed properties and one that we will always remain proud of.
